Metta Mountain is our retreat estate in the magical Langeberg, under 2 hours from Cape Town,
where yogis and contemplative practitioners can immerse themselves in the healing power of nature.

What makes Metta Mountain unique?

☸︎ A moderate hike takes you to a waterfall, perfect for purification, where the summer sun creates a preview of your rainbow body! Or you can swim in one of the nearby river pools, not to mention our eco-pool close to the fire-pit. It makes the heat of summer a pleasure, while in winter a spot of cold plunge therapy is complemented by our wood-fired hot tubs, also ideal for star-gazing. Water is life.

☸︎ The cornerstone of our retreats are the brahmaviharas as taught by the Buddha, starting with metta and mudita bhavana (the meditative cultivation of radiant love, and appreciative joy). We prefer a path of ease, as the most expedient means to tangible wellbeing, taking inspiration from various Buddhist (and non-Buddhist) sources. With practices ranging from those in the Pali suttas to Dzogchen sky-gazing, we are non-sectarian, taking heart from the late Togden Amtrin, who emphasized the primacy of joy, and Togden Achos, who encouraged the teaching of bodhicitta in the West.

☸︎ Our retreat schedule is spacious, so you can pace yourself and rest when necessary. Nodding off while trying to meditate can be unpleasant; instead do yoga nidra, or just go take a nap (an opportunity to practice lucid dreaming). No pre-dawn wake-up for group practice. Sleep is sacred.

☸︎ Our retreats are self-catering. Our spacious communal kitchen allows you to bring the food you prefer, and eat when it suits you. Gluten-free? Low-carb? Intermittent fasting? Vegan? Strict carnivore? You do you.

☸︎ Accommodation includes camping, glamping, dorm, cabin and single room.
